My maternal grandfather made his way to America from Germany as an 18-year old coal trimmer aboard the Imperator, a Hamburg-Amerika line ship launched in May 1912, just one month after the Titanic sinking. Although my interest in the Titanic stems from my family history, the Titanic tragedy is a storytelling form as old as the Greek myths from which the ship was named. This "titanic" book brilliantly captures the arc of that terrible night through the true story of two families told in simple prose accompanied by beautiful illustrations and photographs. It opens with the boarding of the first-class Carters and the third-class Goldsmiths, cleverly introducing the different worlds from which they came and continued to occupy while on board the ship by the four-page foldout depicting a full ship cutaway. The middle section of the book is the moment of impact with the iceberg and the catastrophic consequences that follow as the great liner sinks below the surface in less than three hours with 1,500 souls still on board. The third and last part of the book features the rescue and the aftermath. Both children survive although their family and personal history are forever marked by that night. This is an excellent story and resource for the young Titanic scholar. The information and pictorial detail is accessible and gripping no matter where they are on their Titanic journey. I highly recommend this book either to begin or enhance your Titanic exploration.
Inside the Titanic is all about the Titanic and how it sank. It features a four page Titanic diagram, and even follows two boys as they explore the ship. This book obviously took a TON of time to make, probably because it contains tons of real facts, beautifully drawn and detailed pictures, and real photos from the trip. This book is great for people who love non-fiction and adventure! Great job Ken Marschall and Hugh Brewster!
Fantastic drawings by Ken Marschall that opens up the various decks, rooms, and spaces of the Titanic - ship of dreams. Written in such a way to be enjoyed by children and adults alike. A great way for young readers to ease their way into the history and tragedy of the Titanic story.
While it's a beautiful book, I was expecting something more from it. Our kids are huge Titanic fans (pun intended), and this book was just ok. I was hoping for more detailed explanations to accompany the cross-section of the ship. But really this is more of a narrative of two boys. That's also how it was described, so I can't complain.
This is a very large-sized illustrative type book following the stories of two boys. One is coming to America with his family traveling in 3rd class. The other boy is with his sister and parents in a luxurious 1st class suite. The book gives a simplified account of the sinking and has illustrations with cutaways on every page to offer a visual explanation.Overall I thought the drawings looked nice but I would have liked a bit more detail on the cutaway scenes. Also the book is a bit thin at only 32 pages. Mostly suitable for really young kids.
This is a great book for children telling the story of the Titanic. Just a note,if you order the book it looks like pages are missing but because the pages fold out the inside pages 'make up' the missing pages..
. . . if the TITANIC story interests you, so will this. Ken Marschall's vivid and realistic paintings and especially his cut-away diagrams serve to bring the 1912 tragic tale to life. (He has become all but the "official" artist of the disaster.) I've used this oversize book to interest youngsters in the story--and it never fails. It really strikes the right tone, without so much detail as to clutter up the basic tale. Take a look...this one may grab you, too!
My 6 year old son loves this book. He is into all things Titanic and the illustrations are great, the only minor complaint would be the size of the book (it is oversized) as it doesn't fit in our bookshelf but otherwise its perfect.
This book was purchased as a gift for my sons birthday. Both my sons ages 5 and 7 are enjoying studying the images of what the ship looked like inside. I am enjoying reading the story of three groups of people on board the ship and showing the boys the areas in the ship the story tells about. It is easy enough for my 7 year old to read and understand on his own. He has learned alot about the parts of a ship and how they work in a short amount of time.
